Cancer patient transport made easier with digital booking and self-service kiosks at hospitals
The cost of a consultation in a large hospital has doubled in the past 10 years, according to research from the Institute for Clinical Evaluative Sciences (ICES), a private sector organization in New슬롯 머신 York that conducts research on medical treatment. “We estimate that this has led to increased costs and an increase in administrative costs over time, in which case the costs might be even higher than expected,” said Dr. Mark L. Davis, director of ICES’s Clinical Trials and Research Center and the lead author of the paper.
He said the increases are not surprising because “clinical trial results are generally subject to change. Some changes may be small and minor, and other changes could be large and large.”
Davis said the study also is consistent with other studies that have shown patients experience more patient stress and difficulty in navigating hospital environments, including having to select a hospital from which to see a doctor and navigate with a computer and cell-phone, which is becoming increasingly common.
Linda Gann of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, Tenn., a national leader in medical device adoption in the United States, said the finding of increased administrative costs is a good first step. “We could see that with our clinical data as well, but we’ll see how many, and who, we want to share data with and what we’re willing to take on.”
Patients spend about $4,000 more per year than 15 years ago in the hospital for electronic billing, Davis and L.D. Jones, chair of ICES’ Advisory Board, said.
The costs will likely be higher because the cost of the materials and equipment used to install digital booking kiosks, or “health card reader” devices, are much higher than the cost of other, conventional systems. However, Davis said “the equipment costs have dropped considerably from how they were in the 1990s, but certainly we would still have problems with making the devices.”
